Uche Ignites Straightforward Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS ought to be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
