A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the game plans and team pecking order essential with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Personal talent matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched the young talent shine as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel discuss valuing the group’s energy and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after proving that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he has. We all must help him and build a setting which he can [have] this edge towards opponents and for the objectives we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games against Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in a friendly win against Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an superior one.
