The Three Lions to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an English men’s game since May 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the England side for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Opening and Protest

The event was inaugurated at an event in a London landmark on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the venue by around fifty activists, who called for Israel to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Placards were displayed with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Schedule

The first match of the European Championship will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5:00 PM.

It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will appeal to families and help connect with a broader range of fans.

Host Nations

The Irish team are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualification process; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“It will be a competition for the fans and a celebration of everything we value about the sport – its passion and capacity to unite individuals.”

Over 3 million passes, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be offered to attendees.
