The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he added.
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he came from a well-known family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
