Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to Saturday's victory against Everton represented "the worst 48 hours" since his arrival with the London club.
The Italian offered a rather mysterious statement in his post-match press conference even after earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.
Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his frustration over the previous 48-hour period at the organization.
"The way the squad are eager to improve has been superb and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with a host of problems, they are doing very well after a tricky week," he stated.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because a lot of people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When questioned if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, remarking they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to appreciate because the work from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.
It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-game press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.
It was unclear whether any particular press stories had irked him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July last year.
