Storm Claudia Brings More Inundation to Portugal and the Spanish territory
Once again, Portugal and Spain find themselves battling the aftermath of extensive inundation in the wake of Tempest Claudia brought heavy rain and powerful gusts the previous week.
The Storm's Origin and Path
This weather system developed from a low-pressure zone that had beforehand driven early season chilly and snowy weather through the eastern sectors of the Canadian territory and the north-eastern US at the start of November.
Claudia moved eastward across the Atlantic Ocean over the second weekend of November before decelerating and halting to the northwestern area of the Iberian peninsula, snared in a dip of an ever more meandering air current.
Impact on Iberia
The northwestern Spanish region of Galicia was hit first, with three to six inches of rain coming down along its western coastline in just one full day up to Wednesday night as a sluggish front of rain crawled across the western areas of the region.
More downpours and stormy weather on Thursday led to floods to areas in Portugal where an elderly couple died in the capital Lisbon after floodwaters from the swollen Tagus invaded their residence as they rested.
Stormy conditions continued into the weekend, with a twister devastating a camping ground and a adjacent hotel in the town of Albufeira in Portugal's south on the weekend's Saturday, claiming the life of an British woman aged 85 and harming 28 people.
Wider Effects across Europe
Claudia had wider effects across Europe's western part. By pulling tropical air from the subtropics, the system helped temperatures in south-west France to 29.8C (85.6F), the state's maximum ever November temperature.
By last Friday, this tropical air mass clashed with a cold air mass across the northern regions of Europe, generating a band of rain running from the west of Ireland to Russia.
In the United Kingdom, this halting system of rain brought exceptionally large precipitation amounts, leading to severe flooding in the Welsh region.
As the storm loses strength early this week, the chilly atmospheric system will advance southward, providing the continent its first taste of winter.
Simultaneous Occurrences in the state of California
The Golden State encountered a so-called atmospheric river recently, bringing intense precipitation and high-velocity gusts that led to rapid flooding and landslides in regions impacted by forest fires in the recent past.
Over two inches of rain poured down in the southern region of the state on last Friday, with a another 50 millimetres widely across the state on Saturday.
Over four inches of rain was deposited on shoreline regions of the state's south in aggregate, reaching a full 200 millimetres in areas of elevated terrain.
An atmospheric river is a concentrated stream of tropical, saturated air coming from the equatorial or near-equatorial zones.
Burn scar areas including the Pacific Palisades area and the town of Altadena experienced the worst of the flash flooding and landslides, leading to evacuations.
Across California, a man in his seventies died after his car was carried away from a inundated overpass, and a seven-year-old girl and her dad were pulled into the sea by powerful waves on the California's Central Coast.
