Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
