France to begin stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for response.
