Equatorial Guinea Pair Handed Four-Match Ban for Official Verbal Assault at Africa Cup of Nations.
Carlos Akapo will be absent for his nation's final tournament game at Afcon 2025.
Equatorial Guinea skipper Carlos Akapo and teammate Josete Miranda have both been banned for four matches for abusing the referee following their 1-0 defeat by Sudan at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The ruling was handed down by a disciplinary panel after it examined the referee's report from the tournament clash on Sunday, a loss that confirmed the side's elimination from the competition.
The referee reported that the two players "continually directed abusive and obscene comments" towards him and his linesmen following the full-time whistle.
"These remarks were made in a context of extreme anger stemming from the defeat, but nonetheless represent a grave violation of the principles of respect and fair play as well as the disciplinary regulations," added the referee.
Two matches of the respective suspensions for Akapo and Miranda have been suspended for a period of one year.
Immediate Impact
Both players will now miss their nation's last group match against their next opponents on midweek.
In a related development, the country's football federation has been penalized a amount of $10,000 after its technical staff and players engaged in "persistent and aggressive complaints" against calls by the officials.
The official documentation detailed there was "a progressive decline in behaviour on the touchline" after an unfortunate deflection by defender Saul Coco in the 74th minute.
Additional Governing Body Action
Elsewhere, the tournament organizers have also penalized Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore the sum of ten thousand dollars for "inflammatory comments" made in a post-match interview after his side's defeat to Angola.
