Multiple exchanges between adjudicated offender Jeffrey Epstein and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers were released this week, showing the pair were confidants.
These exchanges, spanning 2013 to early 2019, reveal the two men sharing private â and at times unseemly â perspectives on politics and personal connections.
I'm struggling to figure why [the] American elite feel if u kill your baby by violence and desertion it must be not a factor to your entry to Harvard,â|âIâm trying to|I am attempting to|I'm struggling to} understand why [the] American elite believe if u take the life of your baby by violence and desertion it must be unimportant to your entry to Harvard,â} Summers emailed to Epstein in a 2017 message. Yet hit on a few women 10 years ago and canât work at a network or think tank. DO NOT REPEAT THIS OBSERVATION.â
At that time, Harvard University was grappling with an acceptance discussion after a previously incarcerated womanâs acceptance to a PhD program. Summers, a one-time president of the university who stepped down amid a controversy after making gender-biased comments about women in academia, went on to say in the message to Epstein: âI observed that half of the IQ in [the] world was held by women without mentioning they are more than 51 percent of the populace.â
Summers was previously a key player in Democratic circles â a former treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, one of the primary designers of Barack Obamaâs response to the market collapse, and a steadfast presence in the left-leaning punditry. But doubts have remained about his connection with Epstein, a long-standing contact of Donald Trump. Epstein was charged with a extensive exploitation operation before his demise in jail in 2019 in New York City.
Following the release of a previous batch of emails between Epstein and Summers in a 2023 piece, a representative for Summers stated that he âprofoundly regrets being in contact with Epstein after his convictionâ.
Left-leaning lawmakers made public emails from the Epstein estate this week that indicate Epstein believed Trump was aware of conduct by the now-convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. In reply, Conservative lawmakers released a much bigger collection of 20,000 emails from the Epstein estate.
The released materials show that Summers continued congenial contact with the adjudicated child sex trafficker well into 2019, with the final email exchange occurring only months before Epsteinâs apprehension.
Trump stated on Truth Social on Friday that he would be instructing the Department of Justice and the FBI to examine Epsteinâs âinvolvement and associationâ with Summers, among other well-known liberal leaders and industry figures.
In the emails, Summers and Epstein discuss politics â particularly Summersâs disdain for Trump â as well as the particulars of charitable social networking â and women. Summers, 70, shared with Epstein in a 2019 exchange about his romantic gestures toward an anonymous woman, and being turned down.
âshe's intelligent. holding you accountable for past mistakes,â Epstein wrote in an exchange on 16 March. âignore the daddy im going to go out with the motorcycle guy, you reacted well.. annoyed shows caring., no whining showed strentgh.â
Summers affirmed his sorrow in a recent statement. âI harbor significant regrets in my lifetime,â he wrote. âAs I have said before, my association with Jeffrey Epstein was a major error of judgement.â
Summers was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Epstein contributed more than $9m to Harvard and its affiliated programs between 1998 and 2008, and was designated a visiting fellow to conduct research. The university later determined Epstein âwas missing the scholarly credentials visiting fellows normally possess and his application suggested a course of study Epstein was ill-equipped to pursueâ.
Harvard only ceased accepting Epsteinâs donations after he admitted guilt to child sex offenses in 2008.
By then Obamaâs profile was growing. Summers would ultimately win appointment as director of the White House National Economic Council from January 2009 until November 2010.
After Summers left the White House, he began requesting Epstein for non-profit advice for his wife, Elisa New, a Harvard professor developing a poetry project. Epstein and his foundations made gifts to projects linked to Summersâs wife, and the two men saw each other a dozen times between 2013 and 2016, often for dinner.
After news about Epsteinâs donations surfaced, Newâs charity made a donation âin excessâ of that received to anti-sex-trafficking organizations.
