Chinese Government Condemns US of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Regarding Import Duty Ultimatum
Donald Trump’s newest ultimatum to enforce an additional full import duty on products from China has been described as a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the China’s leadership.
A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the White House occupant carries out his threat, adding that the country was “fearless” of a looming commercial battle.
On Friday, the former president responded at Beijing’s move to tighten its rules for exports of rare earths, alleging China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the international market “captive”.
He also threatened to cancel a planned talks with Chinese leader Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.
The former president’s remarks on last Friday shook stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index falling by nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since earlier this year.
These statements reignited concerns of a commercial dispute between the two economic giants.
Earlier this year, the respective governments had agreed to eliminate significant levies on each other’s products, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the economic powers.
This left, US tariffs on Chinese imports subject to an additional 30% levy compared with the beginning of 2025, while American products entering the country are subject to a 10% tariff.
Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the manner of formal replies to media inquiries – reflected language from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.
The remarks condemned US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “normal actions” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.
The spokesperson remarked that for “a long time”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of national security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” discriminatory practices against the Chinese nation.
“Resorting to import duty warnings is not the right way to interact with Beijing,” the official commented.
“China’s position on a trade conflict has always been steady: we wish to avoid one, but we are not afraid of one.”
Last week, China declared it was tightening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and further resources essential to cutting-edge industry.
This move was regarded as a significant step, as the state refines about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in items such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.
New remarks from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by observers as a method of enhancing bargaining power ahead of future trade talks.
It is unclear whether a summit between Trump and China’s leader, scheduled at a high-level meeting in Seoul later this month, will still proceed.
