Bushfires Engulf WA as Thermal Readings Soar

Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

Broad Heatwave Alerts Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow recent bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of homes and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering blazing heat to much of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a volatile scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a major city was left in darkness last week after powerful winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous flights were cancelled. Severe damage to power systems is expected to create ongoing issues as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Covers Typically Clear Area

Meanwhile, a region known for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, holding the mercury at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by exceptional autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground waterlogged.

  • Primary Driver: Record fall rains soaked the ground.
  • Result: Extended and thick mist formation.
  • Effect: Temperatures remained unseasonably low for an lengthy time.

Severe Weather Brings Wintry Weather to Tourist Islands

And in Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in intense rain, strong winds and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this favored holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the system brought some of the heaviest snow depths in 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce northerly winds swept across the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph observed on multiple locations. The effect of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more typical weather returning.
